사진가의 말
사진과 가장 가까운 이웃이 시라고 믿는다. 또한 사진은 영상언어라고 말한다.
내 사진에 짧은 글을 쓰는 일에 재미 붙이며 살아온 글쟁이를 흉내 내는 사진쟁이는
늘 시인을 부러워한다.
사진은 어차피 보이는 것의 재현이지만 보이지 않는 것을 떠올리게 하고 이야기해야 한다.
결코 만만한 일이 아니다.
더군다나 한 장의 사진 속에 숨어있는 얘기를 끄집어 내 한편의 시를 써낸 시인은 오죽했겠는가?
사실 시인이 선택한 사진 중에는 사진적으로 좀 부족한 것도 있지만
시인의 얘기를 담아내는 역할로 제 몫을 했다고 생각한다.
내가 아끼고 존경하는 시인 후배는 언어의 마술사다.
시 속에 그림이 있고 그림 안에 시가 있다(詩中有畵 畵中有詩)는
소동파(蘇東坡))의 말을 굳이 빌리지 않더라도 이처럼 사진과 시의 어우러짐은 의미 있는 일이다.
한 직장에서 한 솥밥을 먹으며 어려운 일을 함께 했던 시인 후배와 우아하게 반칙을 해본다.
여러가지 사정으로 많이 늦어진 터라 더 미룰 수가 없어 어수선한 시기임에도 책을 펴낸다.
애정을 갖고 지켜봐 주시는 많은 분들께 이 우아한 반칙이 용서되어지기를 바라며
진심으로 감사드린다.
Photographer’s Note
I believe poetry is the closest companion to photography. And photography is often called a visual
language. I’ve been adding a few words here and there to my photos, but when it comes to writing, I am
merely a pretender. I am always envious of the poet.
Photography may be reproduction of what can be seen, but you still have to evoke something invisible
and tell stories. It’s no mean task. Can you imagine how difficult it must have been for Kim to compose a
poem based on a tale hidden inside a photograph? Honestly, some of the photos Kim selected may not
have been the greatest works on my part. But I still think they were still good enough to accompany the
stories that Kim weaved with his words.
I reserve a great admiration for Kim, and he’s a magician with words. The great Chinese poet Su Dongpo
once claimed there are poems within paintings, and paintings within poems. But you don’t always have to
refer to that saying to recognize the significance of bringing photography and poetry together.
Kim and I once worked at the same bank, and we went through a lot together. Now we’re committing our
elegant foul. A combination of reasons forced a substantial delay to our publication. We couldn’t push it
back any more, and thus we’ve decided to put out the book in these uncertain and troubled times.
I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported us along the way. I hope you will
all forgive our Elegant Foul.
